Every valley has its grandstand, and Hunza's is Duikar — a hamlet of stone houses and terraced fields perched high above Altit, better known by the name of the hotel that made it famous: Eagle's Nest. From the ridgetop viewpoint at around 2,850 m, the entire Hunza panorama opens at once: Rakaposhi, Diran, Golden Peak (Spantik), Ultar Sar and the impossible needle of Ladyfinger Peak, with the river and the green terraces of Karimabad far below.
Sunset is the classic show. As the sun drops, the snow faces run through gold, copper and rose while the valley floor sinks into blue shadow — photographers call the line-up one of the best mountain sunsets in Asia. Sunrise is arguably better still: the first light strikes Rakaposhi and Golden Peak in sequence, and on clear mornings the air is so still you can hear roosters in Altit a vertical half-kilometre below.
It's worth more than a photo stop. Several hotels and guesthouses now sit on the Duikar ridge, and a night up here — stars wheeling over Ladyfinger, breakfast facing Rakaposhi — is one of Hunza's simplest luxuries. Walkers can continue up the ridge behind the village for even wider views toward the high pastures.
Duikar is 30 minutes' drive above Karimabad via Altit, on a paved but steep and switchbacked road. Combine it with Altit Fort and the Royal Garden below for a perfect afternoon, then stay for the light.
