Khalti Lake is really the Ghizer River catching its breath: just past Gupis the river widens into a calm, blue-green sheet of water beneath bare hillsides, with the village of Khalti and its fields along the shore. The Gilgit–Chitral road runs right beside it, so the lake announces itself suddenly around a bend — one of the most photographed moments on the drive west.
Among Pakistani anglers Khalti is famous for its trout, and many consider it one of the most reliable trout waters in the country. The fish thrive in the cold, clear river water, and the lake's easy road access makes it the most convenient serious fishing stop in Ghizer. Permits are arranged locally for a small fee.
Khalti has a second, stranger season. In winter the lake freezes solid — hard enough that locals walk across it — and the frozen sheet under low winter light is a spectacle few travelers ever see. Visiting then requires tolerance for serious cold and limited services, but it shows Ghizer at its most elemental.
Because it sits on the main road about half an hour beyond Gupis, Khalti slots easily into any Ghizer itinerary: most travelers stop for photographs and tea on the way to Phander Lake or the Shandur Pass, while anglers base themselves in the village guesthouses for a day or two on the water.
