Fairy Meadows is Pakistan's most famous view, and this short tour is built entirely around earning it and then savouring it. From Islamabad you drive the Karakoram Highway to Raikot Bridge, transfer into local 4x4s for one of the world's most spectacular jeep tracks, and walk the final forest trail up to a grassland at 3,300 m that looks straight onto the Raikot face of Nanga Parbat.
With two full nights at the meadows rather than a rushed one, you get the moments day-trippers miss: alpenglow on the summit at dusk, the Milky Way arcing over the ridge at midnight, and a quiet morning hike to Beyal Camp — with an optional push to Nanga Parbat Base Camp for fit walkers who want to stand above the Raikot Glacier.
Accommodation is in the meadow's wooden cabins — simple, warm and unforgettable. The tour is graded Moderate purely for the 2–3 hour access hike and the optional base camp day; families and casual walkers can keep it as easy as they like.
Day-by-day itinerary
- 1
Islamabad → Chilas via the Karakoram Highway
Drive north on the KKH along the Indus gorge — roughly 10 hours with breaks at Besham and the river viewpoints — to Chilas for the night, with Nanga Parbat's massif appearing on the horizon by late afternoon.
- 2
Raikot Bridge, jeep track & hike to Fairy Meadows
A short morning drive to Raikot Bridge, then the famous 1.5-hour local 4x4 ride up the cliffside track to Tattu village. Hike 5 km (2–3 hours, ponies available) through pine forest to Fairy Meadows and watch sunset turn the Raikot face gold.
- 3
Beyal Camp & optional Nanga Parbat Base Camp
An easy 1.5-hour walk to Beyal Camp's meadows for closer mountain and glacier views — or continue with your guide on the full-day round trip to Nanga Parbat Base Camp (about 3,967 m) above the Raikot Glacier. Evening bonfire and stargazing back at the cabins.
- 4
Sunrise at the meadows, descend & drive south
Catch first light on Nanga Parbat before hiking down to Tattu and jeeping back to Raikot Bridge. Drive south on the KKH to Besham — or over the Babusar Pass to Naran in high summer — for the overnight stop.
- 5
Arrive Islamabad
Complete the drive to Islamabad by mid-afternoon, with drop-off at your hotel or the airport for evening flights.

Fairy Meadows & Nanga Parbat — frequently asked questions
How hard is the hike to Fairy Meadows?
The trail from Tattu is 5 km with about 600 m of ascent, taking 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace. Anyone of reasonable fitness can do it, and ponies are available for those who prefer to ride. Only the optional base camp extension requires solid hiking fitness.
Is the Fairy Meadows jeep track safe?
The track is narrow and looks intimidating, but it is driven daily in season exclusively by experienced local drivers in jeeps maintained for this single road. It has carried travelers safely for decades; nervous passengers are welcome to walk the steepest sections.
What are the cabins at Fairy Meadows like?
Simple wooden cottages with proper beds, thick bedding and shared or attached bathrooms, plus hot meals cooked on site and limited solar or generator power. This is an off-grid alpine pasture, so expect rustic comfort rather than hotel amenities — it's part of the magic.
Can I do Fairy Meadows in fewer than 5 days?
Only by flying: with a Gilgit flight you can compress the trip to 3–4 days, weather permitting. We don't recommend less than two nights at the meadows themselves — the light at dawn and dusk is the entire point of coming.
